Once again, we ask our trusted network of travel bloggers to reveal their must-visit destinations for the year ahead. For 2018, they’ve recommended everything from pristine islands (in need of a little escapism?) to remote adventure destinations (how about some adrenaline?) and up-and-coming urban districts (a bit of city flair?) – but no matter the destination, the message is clear: Get there now, before the crowds arrive!
Alaska, USA – “Once a remote location, America’s last great wilderness is becoming ever more accessible. With increased flight links and cruise companies announcing expanded itineraries, anyone can get a taste of an Alaskan adventure. With wonderful cities, America’s largest national park and North America’s tallest mountain all within driving distance, isn’t it time you basked in some midnight sun?” – Rich Howland and Steph Cryer, Unearthed World

Appenzell
Appenzell, Switzerland – With the opening of their roof-less, wall-lessNull Stern Hotel, artist-entrepreneur brothers Frank and Patrik Riklin, along with hospitality expert Daniel Charbonnier, have single-handedly turned the idyllic Swiss mountain region of Appenzell into a hot destination. This “Zero-Star Hotel” (“the only star is you”) is literally just a bed and a couple of nightstands on a mountain, attended by a local farmer-turned-butler, but that hasn’t stopped it from being booked out into infinity – seriously, the waiting list stretches until 2040, though the “hotel” closes after the 2018 summer season. Still, the Canton of Appenzell has myriad other charms to offer, from folk music festivals to scenic hiking routes, which should keep travellers occupied until the Riklin brothers reveal what mad genius project they plan to launch next. – Jessica Keller [Photo: Claudio Baeggli]

The White City, as it is known, shines like a jewel because of its peculiar architecture of baroque houses built from a white volcanic stone called sillar, for which the historic centre was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site.” – Mary Salas, Los Viajes de Mary

Located along an 18th-century caravan trade route, this city once prospered, luring noble families who built havelis (Rajasthani mansions) from red sandstone – hence the nickname ‘The Red City of Rajasthan’. Every year in January, the city gears up for the Bikaner Camel Festival, dedicated to the only source of transport and livelihood that was available in the early days.
