The capital of vivacious Penang, George Town is one of the country’s major cultural centres – and home to one of the foremost art-centric events in Southeast Asia.
Established in 2010 to celebrate the city’s designation as a Unesco World Heritage Site, George Town Festival has since grown into a formidable force on the culture scene. Artists descend from near and far to stage performances, form engaging collaborations and present fascinating installations, including site-specific commissions and new works created for the festival. Attractions run the gamut from contemporary theatrical productions to photography exhibitions, orchestral performances, film screenings, art shows, street spectacles and dance presentations, in addition to interactive workshops, talks by leading creatives, and an arts market showcasing independent designers, makers and creative brands. Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF)

Drawing on more than 70 years of history, the Melbourne International Film Festival is not only the premier silver-screen event in Australia, but also one of the oldest film festivals in the world.
The 2026 edition will draw leading talent from across the globe, highlighting the works of celebrated directors and cinematic stars in some of the most talked-about projects of the year, from Cannes Grand Prix winner Minotaur to the Sundance hit Josephine and star-studded features like The Beloved, featuring Javier Bardem at his most unsettling since No Country for Old Men. Of course, MIFF is also known as a champion of local creatives, so expect to catch screenings of established and emerging Australian talent, such as Hugo Weaving in the dramedy The Airport Chaplain, as well as a retrospective honouring the work of late Aussie filmmaker Sarah Watt. Between screenings, attendees can enjoy glittering galas and after-parties, plus masterclasses by film industry insiders.
Street Parade

Berlin’s Love Parade is long gone, but its legacy of peace, music and good vibes lives on in Zurich’s Street Parade.
As the event enters its 33rd year, EDM enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds are gearing up for another sure-to-be epic day of dancing in the Swiss streets. Nine specialised stages and 30 roving Love Mobile sound trucks will host top DJs from across the globe, including Adam Beyer, Maceo Plex, Sonny Fodera, Vintage Culture and Andrea Oliva, as the party winds its way along a 2.4km parade route and takes in the most scenic spots the city has to offer. Combining electronic music with an atmosphere of open-hearted acceptance and tolerance – plus a stunning lakeside setting – this is one of summer’s most unmissable experiences in community, inclusion and fist-pumping tunes.
Air Guitar World Championships

Ripping on the old air guitar in the privacy of your own home is one thing, but on stage in front of thousands of fans? That’s best left to the professionals at this head-banging festival promoting world peace.
“World peace” may sound like a lofty goal for an event in which fully grown adults play invisible guitars, but in the sage words of the event organisers: “Wars end, climate change stops and all bad things disappear, if all the people in the world played the Air Guitar.” Since you can’t argue with that kind of logic, watch as masterful air guitarists battle it out for the highest honours in such categories as technical merit, originality, stage presence and “airness”.
