From bright computer screens to sedentary desk jobs, the modern office can be a killer for your physical and mental well-being. Here’s how to keep fit and mindful during your nine to five.

Standing Desk. Sitting for most of the day is just not healthy. Since many of us work in office environments for up to 8 hours a day, we spend too much time sitting and often don’t stretch our legs for hours on end. A great solution to this problem is investing in a standing desk, as standing during the work day has proven to increase productivity and help with back problems.
Keep Good Posture. Investing in a standing desk might not be possible for all of us, but there’s a cheaper solution that also improves your posture: sit on an exercise ball rather than an office chair. It helps reduce tension in your shoulders and neck, strengthens your core, and let’s face it – it’s much more fun to sit on than a chair. Get one here
Drink Up! It’s common knowledge that drinking water during the day is important – staying well hydrated keeps you alert and energised. Keep a small glass of water at your desk. That way you’ll get up more often to stretch your legs and refill your cup – killing two birds with one stone.
Screen Breaks. Sitting for too long isn’t the only problem we encounter in the office – staring at computer screens nonstop can harm your eyes. Remind yourself to take breaks from your screen for both short and longer periods of time. Apps such as EyeLeo can help you integrate these breaks into your work day.
Zen Gardens. Stressed out? A great product that can help give your mind a minute to relax and refocus is a mini zen garden. Rearranging the stones and sticks or raking patterns in the sand helps relieve stress and can enhance your creative thought process. You can make one yourself or buy one here.
Take the Stairs. If you work in an office building, chances are you use an elevator to reach your desk – stop it. Every time you leave or enter the office, take the stairs instead. It will be a pain in the beginning, but keep it up and it’ll become part of your routine. Next step: go up and down the stairs during a coffee break.
Breathe. Even just a quick break of breathing in and out to clear your mind can make a big difference during a stressful day. If you’ve hit a roadblock, take a timeout and breathe for two minutes with this simple website.
Cycle – At Your Desk. We know, we know – if you buy one of these things and start cycling under your desk, your coworkers will think you’re a bit nuts. Really though, they’re just jealous that you’ve found a clever way to exercise while getting work done. Dare to be different and get one here.
Use Your Lunch Break. This might sound obvious, but many people tend to forget it: taking a 15 minute walk, preferably outside, is essential to your lunch break. The fresh air and movement are just what you need to keep you alert for the second half of the day. If you find it hard to motivate yourself, find a walking buddy to chat with.
Keep Your Brain Active. While it is definitely imperative to keep your body active, exercising your brain is just as important for productivity. If you’re finding it hard to concentrate, take a break from work and try out lumosity.com. The free online exercises were designed by neuroscientists to improve brain functions such as memory and problem solving.
The Ultimate Fit Desk. Finally, for the ultimate health enthusiasts that simply cannot keep still: the treadmill desk. You can invest in a treadmill with built-in table, or buy an office treadmill that can be slid underneath your standing desk. Go for it!
