It’s official: July 2023 was the hottest month on record. The signs began early when, just 4 days in, experts documented the world’s hottest day ever. The daily average global mean surface air temperature reached 17.18ºC on 4 July, breaking a record set the day before.

With climate change only showing signs of escalating, there’s not much reason to expect future summers to be any more bearable, and it’s becoming increasingly vital to find ways to stay cool in a warming world. We don’t mean to be all doom and gloom, though; the real message here is that there are many things we can do to make life more comfortable in the face of rising temperatures, starting with the one place we spend most of our time: our homes.

The good news for renters in need of impermanent fixes, as well as homeowners looking to shave a few degrees off the thermometer without emptying their savings account, is that a number of keep-cool methods are highly affordable and easy to implement. But do you know what they are? Take our quiz to test your knowledge of home-cooling best practices.
