The Weekend Adventurer: First up is Jeremy Scott Foster of Travelfreak.net. On his blog, he showcases stories of transformation, adventure and motivation through travel, proving that travel is a possibility for everyone. His main tip when it comes to packing: Have a “go-bag” ready for a weekend away. “You never know when adventure will strike, and it’s best to prepare yourself ahead of time,” he says. “Your bag needs to be light, though – pack only the essentials, leave the fuss behind.”
“Since you’re only going for a weekend, try to keep your bag limited to 35L or less – anything more will bog you down. I’m a fan of the Allpa 35L pack from Cotopaxi. Whether you’re escaping from the city or escaping to the city, this is an outstanding all-rounder backpack that’s rugged enough for the outdoors but stylish enough for urban exploration.” – Jeremy Scott Foster of Travelfreak.net
“To keep things light, leave your jeans at home and bring khakis or hiking pants instead. As a matter of fact, don’t even pack them – just wear them. You won’t need more than a single pair for the weekend, anyway. The goal is to pack as little as possible. Imagine you’re packing for carry-on only.” – Jeremy Scott Foster of Travelfreak.net
“Theoretically, you should only need a few pieces of clothing, but depending on the season (and how light you’re actually able to pack), these compression sacks from Eagle Creek will be your best friend, helping to save precious space in your pack. Packing cubes are an excellent option to keep you organised, but compression sacks actually free up space in your bag.” – Jeremy Scott Foster of Travelfreak.net
“And since music is such an important part of the travel experience, don’t forget a pair of wireless headphones, like these, and a bluetooth speaker like the JBL Flip 4. The Flip 4 fits right into the water bottle holder of your bag, so it barely takes up any space at all.” – Jeremy Scott Foster of Travelfreak.net
The Photography Buff: Next up, some useful photography packing tips from Macca Sherifi of anadventurousworld.com. Macca works as a travel blogger, photographer and presenter. He comments: “As an avid photographer, I often can’t take my main camera with me, as it takes up too much space. But that doesn’t mean I have to sacrifice my photography while I’m away. When I’m packing for the perfect weekend break, I like to bring a number of phone accessories along with me so I can still take top-quality photos, just all on my phone. You can, too– all you need is to be a little clever and creative with it!”
“Two of my go-to phone accessories are a mini-tripod and coloured filters. I always pack my Manfrotto Pixi Evo mini-tripod with me so I can take nice and stable shots while I’m on the road. This little tripod is really useful when you’re travelling solo – all you need to do is set up the shot, put your phone on timer and then run into position. Voilà!” – Macca Sherifi of anadventurousworld.com
“Another item I always take with me is the Manfrotto Lumimuse. This is a set of powerful, portable LED lights that are perfect for lighting photos and videos, especially as they come with different colour filters to create interesting effects. I’m one of those guys who takes a lot of food photos (like, a lot), but often, in dark restaurants, there’s no way I can ever take a photo without it being blurry. That’s where this little light comes in – it lights up your food like nothing else, and produces nice photos.” – Macca Sherifi of anadventurousworld.com
The Island Hopper: Travel blogger Jean Carmela Lim of Holy Smithereens enjoys luxury destinations and, above all, island resorts, but is always up for a good adventure. Follow her tips to ensure that you not only pack light, but also bring all the island essentials – without ever compromising on style. “Packing for a weekend getaway to a resort is just as exciting as the destination itself – the possibilities can be endless!” Jean says.
“Kaftans are your best friend. Either as a cover-up or a full outfit, kaftans are versatile pieces that are perfect to bring to your island destination. They also fold and store very easily, so they’re light as a feather and won’t take up much room in your bag. I love the ones with bright prints by Camilla Franks, an Australian designer.” – Jean Carmela Lim of Holy Smithereens [Photo: Jean Carmela Lim]
“Mix and match your swimwear. One-piece swimsuits are all the rage at the moment, but the joy of bikinis will never die. For instance, when you pack two sets of bikinis, you get four playful combinations to go with, so you double your wardrobe effectively. Jets Swimwear is my preferred brand.” – Jean Carmela Lim of Holy Smithereens
“Make room for accessories and essentials. A statement resort hat not only looks chic and Instagrammable, but they also make for effective sun protection. Be sure to pack sunscreen (the spray types are best for sandy beaches), and grab that book you’ve been wanting to read for the longest time. It will be your perfect pool and beachside companion.” – Jean Carmela Lim of Holy Smithereens
“Pack your kaftans, swimwear and accessories in separate packing cubes. This is to ensure you protect silk and other vulnerable material from snagging and damage. Packing cubes will also double your bag space, which means you have plenty of room for souvenirs.” – Jean Carmela Lim of Holy Smithereens [Photo: Calpak.com]
The City-Breakers: Travel bloggers Andrew and Emily hail from the UK and report on their travel adventures via their blog Along Dusty Roads. They try to be the very definition of slow-travel: “To live, breathe and fall in love with every country we step foot in, rather than just get a passing glimpse of its best bits.” When packing for a city trip, they advise: “You need to minimise stress and wasted time, and maximise the moments available to enjoy the destination; we pack four things to help with this…”
“If you’re a regular city-breaker, it’s absolutely key to have a reliable ‘hand luggage only’ bag – you don’t need more for a break of 2-3 nights – which you know will meet every airline’s size restrictions whilst providing space for your clothes, tech and toiletries. In addition to wearing our heaviest and bulkiest items on the plane, our secret to maximising space is to bring a nice canvas tote or minimalist backpack rolled or folded up inside, which we can then use once out and about exploring the city. We use Millican’s Tinsley the Tote.” – Andrew and Emily of Along Dusty Roads [Photo: homeofmillican.com]
“Most of our time is spent exploring a new city on foot, but we want to know that we can hang out in a cool bar at night without having to bother to change at our hotel. So, we always pack a pair of comfortable and stylish shoes.” – Andrew and Emily of Along Dusty Roads [Photo: Along Dusty Roads]
“Our mobiles are used much more than usual on a break so that we can capture every moment and not get lost, so we always carry a small battery pack to recharge our phones on the move. We also never leave for a city break without downloading an offline Google Map of the destination, making sure we ‘star’ our accommodations and key sites.” – Andrew and Emily of Along Dusty Roads
“The last thing to pack is… space. You never know what treasure you may find in a flea market or in a magical little shop, and part of going away is about bringing something special back with you, so always leave a little extra room in your bag.” – Andrew and Emily of Along Dusty Roads
The Stylish Traveller: Last up is Pola Henderson of Jetting Around. She has called Krakow, Chicago and Paris home, and works as a travel writer and event organiser. On travelling light, she says: “I moved to Paris from Chicago with two medium-sized suitcases and one ‘box of stuff’ that arrived later, so you might say I like it. Since I have a full-time job, my trips are often weekend getaways or city breaks. Packing efficiently into a carry-on bag is essential.”
“When choosing a bag, I consider size, durability, and ease of use. As a city traveller, I use small suitcases on four wheels for easy maneuvering or lightweight, over-the-shoulder weekender bags. They can easily fit in the overhead compartment on the plane or train, and are convenient to bring on public transportation on the way to the hotel. My favourite bags come from Lo & Sons (pictured) and Delsey Paris. They fit all the criteria and are also stylish, an added bonus for this fashion-conscious traveller.” – Pola Henderson of Jetting Around [Photo: Lo & Sons]
“I always pack a large scarf. It keeps me warm on the plane or in heavily air-conditioned spaces, it doubles as a picnic blanket, and can dress up any outfit. I picked up several pashminas on a trip to India, and I also like scarves from Leota New York.” – Pola Henderson of Jetting Around
“Leota specialises in flattering, wrinkle-free dresses and tops. They come in handy on city trips, when I need to dress up for dinner, an event or a performance, but still be comfortable. Another favourite hack is space-saving reversible clothing. Pieces from Jia Collection and Anywhere Apparel can be worn at least two ways, taking you from day to night in a flash.” – Pola Henderson of Jetting Around [Photo: Anywhere Apparel]
