A tumultuous year has finally come to an end, and the world is celebrating the start of 2021 with careful optimism, newfound wisdom and fresh dreams for the future.

Since fashion is often a direct reflection of broader societal, economic and social trends, we rounded up bloggers, fashion professionals and other well-dressed Instagrammers to share their fashion resolutions for the new year ahead. If their goals are any indication, then 2021 is looking to be the year of socially and environmentally responsible style…

Sartorial Investments: “My style resolution for 2021 is to focus on investing in more staple pieces that are timeless and never go out of style. I want to buy less and buy better! I think it’s always a good idea to have a wardrobe clear-out at the start of every year for a refresh. I’ve become more aware of fast fashion and how it negatively affects the environment, so I want to ensure my future shopping habits are sustainable and that I’m supporting brands that are making a positive impact.”

Conscious Choices: “The roaring ‘20s of the new millennium have started in a rough way. Despite the collective and personal challenges that this year has given us, I do believe that we can absorb many life lessons from these long months of uncertainties and dry avenues of income. For this reason, I’ve mastered the skill of thrifting, scouting small businesses I can purchase from, and contributing my finances to local and independent boutiques. In 2021, I want to act more as a team member in the fashion industry, by supporting whoever is close to me. My glamour and aesthetic will better reflect where I am, what I think, and what I stand for. A style and a philosophy that is genderless, fresh, open, caring, approachable and realistic.”

Small Footprint, Big Impact: “I really want to downsize my capsule wardrobe and get into a rhythm of purchasing from smaller-owned businesses, while donating as much as I buy. My closet is 90% vintage/thrifted, but I’d like that number to be higher to reduce my personal carbon footprint.”

New Horizons: “Fashion should be fun and freeing, allowing one to express themselves as they see fit. The goal is to be less strict and boxed-in with my wardrobe by trying new styles, embracing colour and blending the ‘rules’ a bit more.”

Forever Classics: “We live in a trend-based society, so there will come a time when what’s in will be on the way out. The well-made classics are sustainable and never go out of style, so it’s always good to have durable essentials to fall back on. Mine include a pair of Chuck Taylors, several pairs of Nike socks, and a vintage Rolex timepiece or pocket watch, to name a few.”

Social Reflections: “Part of self-expression is wearing garments that represent how you think and how you feel. The goal is to wear brands that match best with where I am in my life, matching moral principles ideal to my own while supporting other black-owned small businesses.”

Styling Versatility: “I try to really space out whenever I’m going to rewear something, but it’s okay to repeat clothes more often. Plus it helps with sustainability. I also want to make sure to buy items that I can see myself wearing in different ways. This will automatically help me wear them more.”

Closet Staples: “Check which staple garments I need and try to choose high-quality and classic looks, so I can ensure they last longer and stay longer on-trend.”

Branching Out: Add a new trend to my wardrobe that I can also keep wearing during the year. Whether it’s shoulder pads or pantsuits, you can get them in a colour that you can wear in the summer and transition to the fall. That way it won’t be sitting in my closet hoping to be in style next year.”

Beyond Trends: “Invest in higher-quality essential pieces that I can wear for years to come.”

Support For Small: “Shop from smaller or lesser-known shops and designers. I think it’s going to be extremely important to support small businesses in every category in 2021, fashion included.”

DIY: “An ambitious goal is to learn to create an entire outfit from scratch. Source materials, cut, sew, style the whole thing. I think being able to create clothing from scratch will give me a greater appreciation for the stuff I buy and source for my own brand.”

Hidden Treasures: “Shop at consignment, thrift and vintage shops. There are so many gems I’ve found over the years, it just makes sense to make a conscious effort to look for more pieces on a regular basis. The Hawaiian shirt in this picture, I found thrifting!”
