Stureplan – For Party People

Stureplan is the pulsating heart of Stockholm’s luxury shopping and nightlife district. During the day, you might spot Instagram’s most fashionable influencers on the square, doing some retail therapy in the Sturegallerian shopping centre, or getting ready for their close-up at sumptuous Sturebadet spa. In the surrounding clubs and bars, you can rub shoulders with the city’s party crowd, and at this time of year, you can even dance the night away under the nocturnal sun. As a palate cleanser after all that hustle and bustle, chill out in Humlegården park at the northern end of the square.

Guests at the suitably fashionable Hotel Kung Carl don’t even have to leave their hotel to get a taste of all that Stureplan is famous for. After all, the hotel offers a stylish French bistro and a trio of happening bars – wine, cocktail and jazz – as well as an intimate rooftop terrace. The rooms are designed in keeping with the heritage building facing Stureplan – classic grand hotel vibes with authentic antiques and modern design touches prevail throughout.

Vasastan – For The Cultured Set

If you want to experience city life like a true Stockholmer, there’s no better place to shack up than Vasastan. This largely residential area north of the city centre is dotted with unique shops, charming cafés and popular restaurants. It’s also within easy walking distance of the city centre and the aforementioned Stureplan area. Aside from boutique shopping, café-hopping and people-watching, Vasastan offers eye candy for art and design buffs. Stockholm Public Library is a must for book and architecture lovers alike, and you will find small museums and galleries dedicated mainly to Swedish art.

Hotel Ruth opened as Vasastan’s first boutique hotel in 2021 and prides Itself on being a home away from home for both locals and out-of-towners. The latter can check into bright rooms, each one uniquely furnished with eye-catching vintage pieces. The former call in for a coffee or a drink throughout the day, enjoy a meal at the contemporary Swedish restaurant, or check out what’s on show at the in-house art space.

Södermalm – For True Originals

Södermalm is often touted as “hipster island”. The former working-class neighbourhood attracts students, artists and others who count themselves among the creative class. Slussen, one of Stockholm’s busiest transit points, is the public transport gateway to Söder, as the island is known colloquially. The SoFo section of the area (South of Folkungsgatan) is the place to explore quirky shops (including some stellar vintage options) and cafés. Hornstull offers more of the same, plus a Sunday food, flea and design market throughout summer. Since 2010, the renowned Fotografiska photography museum, housed in a sprawling red-brick building on the quays, has been a major attraction.

NOFO Hotel taps into the area’s eclectic energy while offering respite from its constant buzz. Located in a former brewery dating back to the 18th century, it’s a reminder of the area’s working-class roots. Each of the rooms is decorated in one of the property’s signature styles with nods to some of the world’s most trendsetting cities. Choose between a Scandinavian Design, Belle Époque, Uptown Classic or Industrial Vintage room that will transport you to Copenhagen, Paris, Rome, London or New York. Just don’t forget there’s another world-class city waiting right outside your door! The hotel’s laid-back wine bar is the perfect place to start a night on the town; take a seat in the cobblestone courtyard and find out what the sommeliers recommend to complement a balmy Stockholm summer evening.

Located on the edge of Södermalm, just across the bridge from the old town of Gamla Stan, Hotel Frantz is perfectly positioned for both serious sightseeing and laid-back local life. Housed in a building dating to 1647, it served as the Stockholm seamen’s home from 1873. more recently, it received an upgrade to smart boutique hotel status. Plush fabrics, natural materials and rich colours serve as the backdrop for unique design touches like gilded fittings, monkey lamps and selected art. Some deluxe rooms even feature ceiling-high tiled stoves.

Solna – For Connoisseurs

A bit farther off the beaten track, the area of Solna is home to several attractions: the Mall of Scandinavia, the largest shopping centre in Sweden, Friends Arena, where you can catch a concert or football match and, last but certainly not least, The Winery Hotel.

Stockholm may be located far north of wine growing country, but that doesn’t stop it from having its very own urban winery. Using the harvest from a vineyard in Tuscany, wines are made on premise, from grape to bottle. Guests can tour the facility and watch the entire wine-making process, take part in tastings and workshops, or simply enjoy a glass of the literal house red by the rooftop pool. The hotel’s contemporary design is inspired by “Brooklyn meets Tuscany” with exposed red bricks, soaring ceilings and plenty of space for a phalanx of wine vats that greet visitors in the lobby. Oenophiles will want to fully immerse themselves in the unusual experience of this destination hotel. However, the city centre is only a short train ride away, so they can explore the rest of the city between tastings.
