First it was posh pizzas, then gourmet burgers and now it’s apparently chic kebabs as London’s dining scene gives the döner a makeover

Chifafa, Clerkenwell, London: At the vanguard of the new ‘prima döners’, Chifafa has gone a long way to restoring the image of the kebab and banishing memories of the greasy after pub/club ‘treat’. They’ve done that by offering fresh, low-fat options such as the Breakfast Kebab on soft souvlaki bread (shown on opener). chifafa.com
Cinnamon Soho, Soho, London: This popular Indian eatery also offers a tempting take-away menu. The Kingly Seekh-Kebab is a standout nestled on warm naan bread and a snip at under seven pounds. cinnamonsoho.com
Berber & Q, Haggerston, London: Tucked beneath railway arches, Berber & Q stays true to the traditions of Levantine cuisine, while combining both Western and Eastern techniques to create their seasonal menus. Make sure to check out the tempting cocktail menu. berberandq.com
Mangal II, Dalston, London: Not so much a flagbearer for the new wave of London kebab concepts, but rather the best of the old guard. Mangal II is quite simply an East London institution. Look out for Brit Art icons Gilbert & George who are regular diners – as are many of London’s most famous chefs when off-duty. The restaurant’s unapologetic twitter account is hilarious and at times outrageous. mangal2.com
Sesame, Covent Garden, London: Celebrating the flavours of eastern Mediterranean street food, Sesame on Garrick Street is the brainchild of Ottolenghi co-founder Noam Bar. You can eat in or take-away and deliveries are now also available. The vegetarian options are a particular highlight. Open Sesame! sesamefood.co.uk
