Guanajuato’s Most Unmissable Sites.

A Promised Parish – While there are plenty of attractive churches to duck into in Guanajuato City, the most impressive and intricate is San Cayetano, better known as Valenciana Church, next to the mine of the same name. The story goes that the mine owner made a deal with Saint Cajetan, the patron saint of good fortune, saying that if God made him rich, he’d build the most beautiful church in Mexico. The mine ended up hitting the largest silver vein ever found in the country, and the owner spared no expense in the intricate carvings and gold leaf of the promised church. Built of pink sandstone, it looks much like it originally did when opened in 1788. [Photo: Wikimedia Commons]
