Chateau Mere
Chateau Mere, Kakheti, Georgia – Georgia claims to have the oldest winemaking tradition in the world, and indeed traces of wine production dating back 8,000 years have been found here. Now just as back then, grape juice is fermented together with the grape skins in qvevri, large clay amphorae buried in the ground, creating unique wines. Chateau Mere is a modern-day, eclectic castle with a laidback vibe, and a great starting point for exploring the wines and abundant cuisine of the region. mere.ge[Photo: Sarah May Grunwald]

Clos de L'Ours
Clos de l’Ours, Haut Var, France – This is a cosy chambres d’hôtes, or guesthouse, in Cotignac, Provence. It’s contemporary in style, but with plenty of wood and terracotta for that typical Provençal feel. Owners Michel and Fabienne Brotons will gladly talk about their wines over an aperitif on the terrace overlooking the vineyards and pool. That aperitif might very well be their Grizzly rosé, a pale pink wine that is made from a blend of 5 red grapes. closdelours.com

Kreinbacher Birtok
Kreinbacher Birtok, Somló, Hungary – One single, conical mountain is the main strength of Hungary’s smallest wine region Somló. Magányos Óriás (“the lonely giant”) is a volcanic hill, and the vineyards are planted on its slopes. The basalt soils lend the (exclusively white) wines their distinct mineral character. Taste them at Kreinbacher, paired with contemporary Hungarian cuisine. Kreinbacher is an ultramodern winery rooted in tradition, and the design rooms reflect this: industrial chic combined with natural materials. kreinbacher.hu, kreinbacher.accenthotels.com[Photo: Kreinbacher Birtok, Juhász Bogi]

Longview
Longview Vineyard Suites, Adelaide Hills, Australia – While South Australia’s vibrant cool climate wine region is mostly known for white wines, brothers Peter and Mark Saturno create award-winning reds as well, because their Longview Vineyard has a unique microclimate. Wake up with the Pinot Noir growing just outside your balcony door in one of the contemporary suites. Blended with Chardonnay, said Pinot Noir is used in the company’s sparkling wine, which pairs well with the Mediterranean dishes served at the popular Sunday Tapas lunch. longviewvineyard.com.au

Staffelter Hof
Weingut Staffelter Hof, Moselle, Germany – Grapes have been cultivated on the precipitous slopes along the Moselle for centuries, predominantly for the region’s well-known Rieslings. At 1,150-year-old winery Staffelter Hof traditions are well respected, but 7th generation winemaker Jan Matthias Klein isn’t afraid to do something new either. One example: he created an interesting wine drink with Riesling and Mate. Klein’s mother runs the homey apartments and rooms, which come with all mod cons, including a fridge pre-stocked with wines. staffelter-hof.de
