Theodoros Karasavvas

Theo is an inactive lawyer who speaks four languages and writes for a living. He claims that pants not being necessary to perform the duties of his job played the most important role when he had to change careers (yes, we mean ‘trousers’ for British readers). Sleep-deprived and addicted to chocolate, when he’s not working he usually plays video games, reads graphic novels and investigates the culture of science fiction.

You write about a variety of topics for amexessentials.com, what most inspires you about your subjects?

I am a facts junkie who seeks new information on daily basis. One of the reasons I love doing what I do is that I learn new things every day. My main inspiration is the knowledge I gain while doing research about a topic that I then share with readers.

What kind of details do you look for?

The little details that most people won’t notice or be interested in discovering. After all, it’s the little details that make big things happen, and history has repeatedly shown that.

What’s the most unusual thing you’ve covered?

I’ve worked for many websites whose main focus was alternative history, creepy and bizarre facts, so the list is really long and weird. For some reason, what comes to mind first is how Aeschylus, the father of tragedy, was pretty much murdered by an eagle that dropped a tortoise on him, mistaking his bald head for a rock.

What social media channel inspires you most and why?

I mainly use Facebook and Twitter to share and promote my work. They don’t inspire me in any way, really.

How do you relax?

I relax only when I sleep. Workaholics don’t relax while conscious and I’m afraid that’s a rule.

Film or TV?

Film, of course. And it’s not even close.

Books or e-books?

Books . . . I’m old-fashioned that way. I respect tradition and think that some things should never change, no matter how much our world advances technologically.

Wine or beer?

Neither. I love cocktails.

Street food or fine dining?

It really depends on the circumstance and the mood. However, I will say this: As long as the food’s good, I couldn’t care less if it’s a burger or a lobster.

Favourite place?

Plaka, right below the Parthenon in Athens. The most ancient and continuously inhabited neighbourhood in the world. A truly unique place that combines many different architectural styles from so many historical periods.

Your three travel essentials?

My backpack, my smartphone and my wallet.

Your essential luxury?

Chocolate in any form. It can be ice cream, a soufflé, a drink, a pastry or a popular chocolate bar you can find in the grocery store. The sweetest sin man ever created.
